As big data continues to evolve, it’s going through various stages of development. Phase one was the emergence of streamlined software technologies capable of handling massive amounts of information. Phase two involved the advanced tools, apps and devices capable of harvesting real-time data. Now we’ve entered phase three: moving the stuff from point A to point B.
Too Big for the Cloud
Moving the colossal amounts of data has actually become a colossal issue, according to Recode.net. This especially holds true when the data sets are so large that they can’t be moved to the cloud. Some of the biggest, high-tech companies across the globe are moving entire storage systems from place to place just to be able to share information. And it’s about more than just moving the stuff. With federal guidelines prohibiting the destruction of certain data, many also need a place to store it.
All about Infrastructure
Phase three is thus all about infrastructure, something eventually required for all new ideas. The invention of the auto, for instance, led to the development of roads, freeways and gas stations. And big data is resulting in the demand for systems that can hold increasing amounts of information while performing at increasingly higher capacities.

- New networking tools

All these new developments need to be aimed at managing the gargantuan amounts of data being generated and analyzed by the first two phases. While the growing amounts of data across the board could eventually benefit from infrastructure advancements, certain situations have a more immediate need. Examples include:
Security cameras: Airport security managers have begun discussions on eventually moving to UltraHD cameras, aka 4K, vastly improving resolution, details and searchable streams to reduce security risks. A mere minute of 4K footage on a single camera, however, requires about 5.4 gigabytes.
Physics research: Physicists in Geneva have already devised a distribution system that combines networking technology and flash storage, allowing research centers across the world tap into their massive data cache. Their cache, by the way, contains about 170 petabyte datasets. A petabyte, by the way, is equivalent to 1 million gigabytes.
And those are just two examples of massive data needs cropping up across the globe. As big data continues to grow, the need for cost-effective, reliable, compact and eco-friendly infrastructure solutions are going to grow right along with it.
